Keratin Hair Treatments

Keratin hair treatments have become wildly popular since a miraculous new hair straightening system called ‘Brazilian Blowout’ hit the market. The astonishing results are due to heated methylene glycol that realigns with the disulfide bonds in the hair shaft, leaving it completely smooth and straight. The results last for months setting women free from hours of blow drying with a hot hair dryer and hair irons.

The term ‘keratin treatments’ came about as a result of the backlash when it was found that dangerous levels of formaldehyde gas were released in the process which endangered the health of both the consumers and the hairstylists who inhaled the gas during treatments. Regulations were called for and Brazilian blowouts were rebranded and called ‘keratin treatments’.

Keratin is a structural protein in hair and is one of the ingredients in a Brazilian blowout formula that deeply conditions and smooths curly and frizzy hair.

The formula is applied to the hair and sealed with a flat iron. A treatment can take up to 90 minutes depending on the length of your hair. Some keratin treatment products include Global Keratin Complex, Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy by Coppola, Brazilian Keratin Treatment, and La-Brasiliana. The solution takes time to work and you should not shampoo your hair for at least three to four days after treatment.

Advantages of Keratin Treatments

It significantly shortens blow-drying sessions by between 40%  60%.
Your smooth hair will stay that way even in moist conditions and light rain.
After the waiting period, you should shampoo your hair with sulfate-free shampoo to help prolong the treatment. Results can last anything from two to three months.

Formaldehyde-free formulas are available and you should ask your hair stylist to check the ingredients list before you have a treatment. Stay clear of ingredients like methylene glycol, paraform, methylene oxide, formic aldehyde, oxomethane, methanol, or timonacic acid all of which release formaldehyde gas when heated.
